CSL shares its environmental progress in its 2024 sustainability report

June 27, 2025

For the 12th consecutive year, CSL Group is providing a comprehensive assessment of its results and initiatives regarding environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters in its 2024 sustainable development (SD) report.

“The progress we made in 2024 comes down to people working together with a shared sense of purpose and a commitment to doing what’s right,” says Louis Martel, CSL’s president and CEO. “Across CSL, from our ships to our offices, it’s that everyday effort that drives real change.”

This year’s publication highlights the tangible measures CSL has adopted to reduce emissions, optimize resource and waste management, and prevent marine pollution. It also covers the company’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence in operations, strengthen cybersecurity, promote diversity, and support local communities.

The environmental highlights include:

  • 7% reduction in global fleet emissions since 2023.
  • 67% decrease in landfill waste since 2010.
  • 30% reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions per tonne of cargo transported in 2024 compared to 2005.
  • 9 vessels fueled by biodiesel operating on the Great Lakes.
  • 576 cetacean sightings reported by seafarers since 2015.

The report also outlines the environmental performance of CSL International and Canada Steamship Lines within the Green Marine certification program. It shows the levels achieved in 2024 and the initiatives put forward in collaboration with the program, particularly in terms of ship recycling.
