The MV Nukumi, the diesel-electric, self-unloading vessel in the Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) fleet, has been honoured as one of the Ships of the Year at the 2023 Marine Propulsion Decarbonisation Awards.
Held September 26th this year in Amsterdam, the prestigious award ceremony recognizes vessels that set new standards in ship optimization, maritime decarbonization, and sustainability. The visionary design and outstanding performance of the MV Nukumi played a pivotal role in its victory.
Specially designed for Windsor Salt, the MV Nukumi features numerous innovations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, atmospheric pollutants, and the vessel’s overall environmental footprint. Notable features include Tier 3 diesel-electric engines, a ballast water treatment system, residual heat recovery, and quieter machinery.
In terms of operations, the MV Nukumi features a fully automated single-point loading system coupled with cutting-edge cargo handling technology. The system eliminates the need for vessel movement during the loading process, clearing the way for safer and more efficient operations. The vessel’s modern hull design and twin-fin diesel-electric propulsion system provide exceptional maneuverability, permitting faster transits through narrow channels, even at low tide.
Other recognition for the MV Nukumi has included being named Bulk Carrier of the Year in 2022 by the International Bulk Journal, and Significant Ship of the Year by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.
