June 2020 marked the Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping’s fifth anniversary. Clear Seas is an independent research centre that supports safe and sustainable marine shipping in Canada. Over the years, Clear Seas has provided research on issues around sustainable marine shipping, including underwater noise, oil tanker safety, and ship air pollution.
After five years at this work, Clear Seas has observed an increasing recognition that its approach to fact-based research will play an important role in providing trusted information on the safety and sustainability of marine shipping in Canada during the post-COVID-19 recovery and beyond.
During its first five years, the Clear Seas website has become key to building awareness regarding commercial marine shipping and to reaching Canadians of all ages and backgrounds, including policy makers, researchers, and educators – everyone who wants to know more about marine shipping issues.
The website has attracted some 200,000 users since its launch in 2016, including 130,000 from across Canada. They have together viewed the online resources provided by Clear Seas more than 370,000 times.
By providing in-depth, unbiased and comprehensive information on topical and often contentious issues, Clear Seas reaches a cross-section of Canadians in both official languages, encouraging informed dialogue on the impacts and value of commercial marine shipping.
