Clear Seas further advances indigenous leadership in maritime

August 27, 2025

Clear Seas, a Green Marine Supporter member, in partnership with BCIT, Mitacs, and the Students On Ice Foundation, expands its Indigenous Internship Program, supporting Indigenous-led marine stewardship and environmental research.

The 2025 cohort is the program's fourth and largest to date. It provides paid, remote internships that connect Indigenous knowledge holders with academic and industry partners across Canada.

Key Highlights:

  • Interns explore critical topics including Indigenous-led marine stewardship, sustainable harvesting, and whale strike mitigation.
  • The program fosters integration of Traditional Knowledge with scientific research, amplifying Indigenous voices and strengthening community connections.
  • Past interns have contributed to cultural exhibits and real-world environmental solutions.

"This program is about restoring community connections and transforming marine knowledge sharing," explains Sarah Thomas, Director of Indigenous Programs at Clear Seas.

Clear Seas invites individuals, educators, funders, and industry professionals to support or partner with this important initiative.
