The Bay of Sept-Îles is now home to Canada’s first-ever Educational Marine Area. Led by the Corporation de protection de l’Environnement de Sept-Îles with the support of the Port of Sept-Îles, the initiative aims to connect youth with the marine environment while promoting the preservation of coastal ecosystems.
“This Educational Marine Area will give our youth a hands-on opportunity to explore issues related to the marine environment, biodiversity, and sustainable development, while actively involving them in protecting their environment,” says Alexandra Chouinard, the president and CEO of the Port of Sept-Îles.
Originating in French Polynesia through the initiative of environmentally conscious Marquesan students, the concept now encompasses more than 260 educational marine areas worldwide. By Canada joining this list, it offers the young residents of Sept-Îles the chance to better understand their marine environment. The goal is to nurture young people’s curiosity about science and the environment.
