Canada and British Columbia fund new projects to protect Pacific salmon

February 1, 2021

Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard and the Province of British Columbia have confirmed more than $4 million in funding to support four additional projects to help restore B.C. salmon habitat.

Protecting and restoring wild fish habitat and stocks is a priority for both the federal and provincial governments. The investments form the basis for a sustainable future for a wild fishery and its related stable employment.

The British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund has been able to finance 42 projects to date, representing a total investment of $71 million. In addition to meeting specific criteria prioritized by this fund, the selected projects had to be submitted by Indigenous communities, industry associations, environmental non-government organizations, commercial enterprises or academic institutions.
