Innovation maritime has launched an innovative project to adapt heating infrastructures originally designed for heavy fuel oil (HFO) or intermediate fuel oil (IFO) to facilitate ships and port equipment to run on biodiesel during the colder winter months. Funded by the PLAINE program of le Réseau Québec maritime (RQM), the initiative addresses the urgent need to decarbonize the marine and port operations.
While biodiesel offers significant potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, its low-temperature properties can make it a challenge to use in winter. Innovation maritime's solution involves efficiently modifying heated tanks to use this sustainable fuel under harsh winter conditions.
The project has involved several Green Marine members, including the Centre d'expertise en logistique portuaire, the Port of Trois-Rivières, the CSL Group, Fednav Limited, and Servitank Inc., with the support of l’Université de Sherbrooke.
