For another consecutive year, BC Ferries is among the recipients of the Green Wave Awards that the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) gives to honour outstanding participation in its environmental incentive program.
The PRPA also recognized 11 vessels for using underwater noise mitigation technology during 2025. They included the BOREAL VOYAGER, an LPG vessel operated by another Green Marine participant, AltaGas Ltd.
Launched in 2013, the Green Wave program encourages shipping companies to adopt emission-reduction measures and to implement sustainable technologies on their vessels. The program offers participating vessels reduced harbour dues based on their environmental performance, which is assessed using recognized standards, including Green Marine, the Environmental Ship Index, and the Energy Efficiency Design Index.
The Green Wave program contributes to two of PRPA’s environmental priorities: reducing air and carbon emissions related to port activities and reducing the impact of maritime shipping on marine mammals along British Columbia’s north coast – in part through noise reduction measures. In 2025, 174 individual vessels qualified, and 56% of them had above-average carbon efficiency.
