BC Ferries and the Snuneymuxw First Nation sign relationship protocol agreement

July 28, 2022

With operations in Snuneymuxw territory, BC Ferries has entered into an historic relationship protocol agreement with the Snuneymuxw First Nation to build a strong partnership with each other and to guide their future work together.

Singing the agreement based on a recognition of the Snuneymuxw First Nation’s rights under the Snuneymuxw Treaty of 1854 that protects and preserves Snuneymuxw lands and waters and establishes the rights of trade and commerce in their territory, BC Ferries and the Snuneymuxw First Nation have together forged a common pathway towards a shared understanding on the range of important issues.

With four terminals currently operating in Snuneymuxw territory, BC ferries and the Snuneymuxw First Nation have outlined shared goals for the territory. These include actions such as engaging members of the Snuneymuxw First Nation in specific projects with the objectives of gaining the Nation’s free-willed prior informed consent, as well as establishing the process for a collaborative, transparent, and respectful long-term relationship between BC Ferries and the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

Built on mutual recognition, respect, cooperation, and benefit, this agreement also lays the foundation for creating new opportunities that champion Snuneymuxw’s knowledge and marine expertise.
