Australian ports recognized for their sustainable practices

August 19, 2025

The Port Authority of New South Wales has strengthened its sustainability credentials by becoming the first Australian port authority to be certified under the Green Marine program.

The Green Marine certification follows a thorough assessment of the environmental and sustainability practices at the port authority’s six locations using the program’s strict criteria to evaluate measures being taken to improve air emissions, underwater noise, waste management and other performance indicators. With its certification, the Port Authority of New South Wales joins a global network of ports recognized for leading the way in sustainable operations.

The port authority has also become as a Silver Partner in the New South Wales Government’s Sustainability Advantage program. The New South Wales Government initiative aims to foster sustainable practices among medium and large organizations. Initially recognized as a Bronze partner in 2021, the port authority is now at the Silver level because of its efforts in embedding sustainability into its culture and decision-making, including defining and disclosing Scope 3 emissions, making progress on Scope 1 and 2 net zero targets, and completing a climate change risk assessment and adaptation plan to support long-term resilience.

As it works towards net zero by 2040, the port authority is embarking on landmark projects, including shore power at White Bay Cruise Terminal that would facilitate ships connecting to renewable electricity at berth. Scheduled for completion in 2026, it is the first project of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
