Algoma and Furetank are doubling their number of climate-friendly dual-fuel product tankers

November 10, 2022

Furbear, the joint venture between Algoma Central Corporation and its Swedish partner Furetank, is doubling the size of its fleet with the construction of four additional dual-fuel ice class 1A 17,999 DWT climate-friendly product tankers for Northern European routes.

The new-builds will be part of Furetank’s Vinga series designed to reduce air emissions and other environmental impacts. The four tankers will have dual-fuel capability to run on LNG/LBG or gas-oil, but also be fully equipped for shore power. The Vinga series features a battery hybrid solution and other innovations to reduce fuel and energy consumption, and thereby lower the emissions of CO2, sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide and hazardous particles.

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), these ships are the most energy efficient in their category, having obtained the best Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) value.

The four new vessels will be constructed at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou, with delivery scheduled between 2023 and 2025.
