Alabama Coastal Foundation reports increased event recycling

February 27, 2026

The Alabama Coastal Foundation has shared the latest outcomes from the Cleaner, Greener LoDa Committee, highlighting the success of community-led recycling at major Mobile events.

Through volunteer engagement and city support, 15,121 pounds (6,859 kilograms) of recyclable materials were collected in and around the Lower Dauphin Entertainment District (LoDa), a 19% increase from the previous year. The total included 4,185 pounds (1,898 kilograms) of Mardi Gras beads that were donated to Augusta Evans School, extending the life of materials that would otherwise have been discarded.

The Cleaner, Greener LoDa Committee brings together city departments and community organizations to improve sustainability at large-scale events. Its Eco Team volunteer programme supports the recycling of plastics, aluminium and cardboard from events such as Mardi Gras and the two-day Ten Sixty Five Music Festival, while also encouraging greener practices among entertainment venues and other businesses.

By sharing the results, the Foundation underscores the value of collaboration in advancing sustainability. The initiative aims to minimize litter, protect local waterways, and encourage long-term changes in how waste is managed at large public events.
