Accelleron collaboratively advances marine fuel savings with new projects

March 19, 2026

Accelleron has worked in tandem with HD Hyundai Marine Solution (HD HMS) to  successfully implement Engine Part Load Optimization (EPLO) on two large container vessels to achieve substantive fuel savings under real operating conditions.

The 14,000 TEU Basle Express and Essen Express operated by Hapag-Lloyd underwent main engine tuning as well as modifications to turbocharger components to improve efficiency at lower engine loads. Sea trials and subsequent operations demonstrated fuel savings of more than 10 g/kWh, equivalent to about 5% of overall fuel consumption within specific load ranges.

The EPLO solution is designed for vessels operating at speeds below their original design point, facilitating efficient performance while supporting energy-efficiency objectives and reducing carbon cost exposure. Following recent hull and propeller retrofits on the two vessels, the EPLO upgrades delivered additional fuel savings while preserving the capability to provide required propulsion power when needed.

Completed within four weeks of the initial orders, the projects delivered confirmed efficiency gains that have led Hapag-Lloyd to extend implementation for the remaining eight vessels in its Dortmund Express class.

Accelleron and HD HMS have jointly also secured contracts to implement the EPLO solution on more than 100 other vessels worldwide.
