The Port of Oakland set a record during the first half of 2024 with 94% of vessels plugging into cleaner shore power while at the port rather than keeping their diesel engines running.
By comparison, the shore power plug-in rate for all of 2023 was 85%. It reached 99% for the month of May 2024 and has been above 91% since November 2023.
The port continues to build on its plug-in capacity with plans to be the first U.S. port to install mobile shore power outlets. The mobile outlets will provide greater flexibility in terms of where a vessel can plug into shore power, as well as address some of the challenges in aligning ships with stationary plugs.
