A North American-wide Coastal Cleanup Day with Ocean Wise

September 26, 2022

In celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day 2022, Ocean Wise organized four different cleanup activities in North America with the help of various sponsors. More than 500 volunteers mobilized for the occasion in San Francisco, Toronto, Halifax, and Vancouver collected 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds) of trash.

This latest initiative has contributed to record numbers for Ocean Wise over the last 29 years: a million volunteers have prevented 2.1 million kilograms (4.6 million pounds) of garbage from entering rivers, lakes, and oceans.

The San Francisco cleanup was Ocean Wise’s first shoreline cleanup in the United States. It brought together 77 volunteers to clean the India Basin Shoreline Park. In Halifax, the Black Rock Beach in Point Pleasant Park was cleaned up by 69 volunteers, with the help of political representatives including the Mayo. A hundred volunteers gathered at Woodbine Beach in Toronto, and 180 volunteers were at English Bay Beach in Vancouver.
