Great Lakes Towing celebrated its 125th anniversary this July by welcoming the newest vessel to its fleet of ice-class tugboats.
The Minnesota is the eighth Cleveland-class vessel built as part of the company’s 10-tug fleet renewal. Each new tugboat – named after a U.S. state – replaces two aging tugs with greater power, fuel efficiencies and lowered emissions.
Based on Damen’s Stan Tug 1907 ICE design, the Minnesota was built at the Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland, Ohio. The Minnesota has two Rolls-Royce Solutions’ mtu 4000-series diesel engines with eight cylinders in V formation, each coupled with Twin Disc MGX-5321 reduction gears, which puts it in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 3 emissions standards.
