On June 2nd, the Port of Québec announced its new greening plan – a set of concrete initiatives aimed at improving air quality, reducing heat islands, and strengthening the port’s relationship with the surrounding community.
In line with its 2035 Vision, the port has committed to increasing canopy coverage to 30% across its non-industrial areas. Several projects are already under way to achieve this goal, such as tree planting, landscaping, green open system development, and fence greening.
Additional projects, such as the demineralization of the Nouvelle-France entrance and the installation of planters at Anse Brown, are also planned.
Over the next decade, the port aims to complete 20 beautification projects, 10 demineralization sites, five community collaborations, three infrastructure greening projects, and two urban agriculture initiatives.
This planned transition is the result of a collective effort with committed local players, including the Association forestière des deux rives (AF2R), the Collectif Canopée, the Centre d’enseignement et de recherche en foresterie (CERFO) and the City of Québec (Green Marine supporter), which are all committed to transforming the port area into a greener, healthier space.
