A decade of Clear Seas: amplifying voices for safer waters
Clear Seas is marking a significant milestone with its 10th anniversary this year. Since its official launch in 2015, the organization has dedicated itself to making marine shipping safer, more sustainable, and more inclusive for future generations. Founded in response to a recommendation from Canada’s Tanker Safety Expert Panel, Clear Seas has been given the mission to fill knowledge gaps and ensure that fact-based research guides marine decision-making.
Over the past decade, Clear Seas has conducted a wide range of studies on issues such as vessel drift, the availability of emergency towing vessels, and the risks of Arctic shipping. Its microsites and interactive tools, including the Wheel of Maritime Law, and the Maritime Incidents & Accidents Dashboard, have made complex research accessible to a broad audience. These resources give the industry, policymakers, and communities the information needed to better understand risks and opportunities.
Public engagement has also been a cornerstone of Clear Seas’ approach. Through five national opinion polls conducted with the Angus Reid Institute, the organization has tracked Canadian views on marine shipping, ensuring public concerns remain part of the conversation. By amplifying these voices, Clear Seas has helped to align research with the priorities of coastal and inland communities.
By combining rigorous research with inclusive dialogue, Clear Seas has built trust as a bridge-builder in the maritime industry. Its 10th anniversary is both a reflection on past achievements and a commitment to future collaboration.
