A 100% shorepower cruise season begins in Seattle

April 10, 2025
The Port of Seattle has officially launched its first cruise season with shore power available at all three of its cruise terminals, which makes it one of the few home ports globally to offer full electrification for cruise ships.

Seattle’s 2025 cruise season began April 12th with the Norwegian Bliss, the first of many vessels to turn off its engines and connect to shore power while at berth. With 298 scheduled sailings and nearly two million passengers expected in 2025, the greater availability of shore power for cruise vessels marks a significant milestone for the West Coast's largest home port.

The shift to shore power is part of the broader commitment by the Port of Seattle to decarbonize its maritime operations. By ensuring that all cruise ships can plug into cleaner electrical power while at berth, the port is significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions, other air pollutants, as well as noise, that would otherwise drift to nearby urban communities.

A Green Marine certified participant, the Port of Seattle is spearheading the future of sustainable cruise travel, by combining technological innovation with environmental leadership to foster economic growth and climate resilience.
