As 2025 comes to an end, Green Marine celebrates another year filled with progress, innovation and collaboration. Among the highlights are the first anniversary of Green Marine International, the growth of its North American and European teams, and the successful completion of a pilot project in new countries. The renewal of a memorandum of understanding on the international scene, the coordination of diverse meetings and the onboarding of many new members have also strengthened the network’s collective momentum. Let’s revisit the key moments of a year that has further grounded our pursuit of a more sustainable maritime future.
In May 2025, Green Marine International celebrated its first anniversary. As the organization overseeing the Green Marine and Green Marine Europe certification programs, it champions responsible corporate leadership, sustainability and stewardship. Rooted in these core values of its diverse membership, it empowers maritime stakeholders globally to implement substantive, measurable actions beyond regulatory requirements.
Green Marine International continues to inspire, guide and support the global maritime community towards achieving a cleaner, greener future.
Four new talents joined Green Marine International’s team this year.
In March 2025, Green Marine welcomed Émilie Bédard as its new communications officer, replacing Julie Turmel, who embarked on new challenges after several effective years in that role. Based in Québec City, Émilie works closely with the team on internal and external communications projects and actively contributes to the logistics of GreenTech.
On the European front, Green Marine International had the good fortune in early February 2025 of appointing Antidia Citores as the General Manager for Green Marine Europe. With her strong background in maritime law and ecological transition, she is helping advance the European program’s environmental leadership and impact.
In April 2025, Green Marine Europe officially welcomed Pasquine Albertini in the role of communication manager for Europe. She leads Green Marine Europe’s communications strategy and initiatives, ensuring coherence in messaging and promoting innovative outreach initiatives throughout Europe.
At the end of May 2025, Cherif Belgaroui joined the team as program manager to provide support and guidance to the European membership and coordinate the program’s further development. He coordinates the framework’s development, leads advisory committees and working groups, and actively contributes to the program's visibility at the European level.
In May 2025, Green Marine International announced the expansion of its voluntary environmental certification program to new countries. This decision stemmed from the determination that the program's performance criteria are sufficiently challenging beyond each nation’s existing regulations.
As a result, the Green Marine program has been expanded to maritime operations in Australia, Mexico and the Bahamas. Participants from each of these nations have already been welcomed, reinforcing the program’s global reach and credibility.
This expansion represents a significant step forward for sustainable shipping, raising the overall bar for maritime transportation’s environmental sustainability. The new participants include Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd., SSA Marine Mexico, Manly Fast Ferry Pty Ltd., and the Port Authority of New South Wales.
For yet another year, collaboration has remained at the heart of Green Marine’s progress, with more than 30 meetings that brought together hundreds of voices from the maritime community.
Working groups, advisory committees, briefing sessions, and technical debriefings all provided valuable opportunities for exchange that contributed to the continual improvement of the certification program. These rich and constructive discussions helped identify new avenues for progress and strengthened the collective commitment to environmental excellence.
Green Marine International (GMI) and the World Association for Port Cities (AIVP) have formalized the renewal and expansion of a partnership initiated in 2018, during the AIVP World Conference Cities & Ports held in New York from 18 to 21 November 2025.
A new Memorandum of Understanding has been signed, with a clear objective: to amplify the impact of joint actions in support of more sustainable, more responsible ports that are better integrated into their territories.
At its GreenTech 2025 conference in June, Green Marine unveiled the certification results for the 2024 reporting year, which showed a 10 percent increase in the number of self-evaluations submitted, reflecting the program’s expanding reach. Even with the introduction of additional criteria and a new performance indicator for ports regarding aquatic ecosystems, the overall yearly average by participants held steady at 2.9 on the program’s one-to-five scale, underscoring the strength and rigour of the continual improvement framework.
This year, Green Marine welcomed more than 200 delegates to the 18th edition of GreenTech, held June 9th to 11th in New Orleans. The conference featured more than 50 speakers and 12 exhibitors!
