The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of our flagship event, GreenTech 2020, which was set for June 2-4 in Montreal, Quebec.
We might have put one knee down in front of COVID-19 and cancel our flagship event, however, we had not said our last word!
In a effort to relay some of the valued knowledge sharing, networking and discussions at the core of GreenTech, our team developed six interactive, video-conference sessions.

Green Marine is delighted to report GreenTech 2018’s unprecedented success in Vancouver, British Columbia! Green Marine’s annual conference welcomed more than 250 attendees – the most ever at our yearly gatherings. Attendees had the opportunity between May 30 and June 1 to listen to and learn from more than 40 speakers with expertise and experience regarding various environmental challenges being addressed by Green Marine participants, as well as emerging issues. The guided tour of the BC Ferries’ fleet maintenance unit just before the conference and the cruise provided by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority at GreenTech 2018’s conclusion perfectly bookended this year’s events.
“We’re proud to be active participants of Green Marine,” Robin Silvester, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s president and chief executive officer, said during the conference’s opening session. “We really value the role that the organization plays to raise the bar in environmental practices in the maritime industry, and it’s great to hear about the progress made to date and it’s to the credit of all of the organizations in this room.”
The attendance of Megan Leslie, WWF-Canada’s president, during the same conference session underscores the collaborative approach on which the Green Marine environmental certification program’s development and credibility are founded.
For the first time, Green Marine invited academic researchers and environmental stewards to share their knowledge through poster presentations and we’re pleased to relate that 11 science-based posters were on display for attendees to peruse. The poster format permitted environmental group representatives and graduate school researchers to present their marine-related findings without having to be present throughout the conference.

Green Marine’s 10th annual conference went as smoothly as the great cruise tour of Port Everglades that concluded it! GreenTech 2017 was quite successful with a stellar lineup of speakers and a dozen exhibitors generating the interest of 140 people who registered for the event.
Knowledge and best practices, information sharing, and great networking – under bright sunny skies – were always on the agenda. Sustainability was put forward in many great ways: from the opening notes by Heike Deggim, the International Maritime Organization’s senior deputy director of the Sub-Division for Protective Measures of the Marine Environment Division, who shed light on the shipping industry’s constant need to improve its environmental performance in a global framework that avoids inconsistent regulations, to the final cruise event where attendees obtained a closer look at the port’s container, bulk and cruise facilities, as well as its initiatives to mitigate environmental impacts on Florida’s unique ecosystems and marine mammals such as manatees.
The first ever session devoted to the cruise industry – prompted by Fort Lauderdale’s proximity to Port Everglades ranked among the world’s top three cruise ports – proved to generated extensive interest and keen discussion. Moderated by Ginger Garte who is Lloyd’s Register Americas’ environmental and sustainability director, the panel featured representatives from the Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean International, and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). The session highlighted the innovative efforts by the cruise industry to minimize its environmental footprint.
As always, GreenTech 2017 addressed numerous other issues, all directly linked to sustainable shipping from clean ship innovation to underwater noise, air emissions, LNG, community resilience, port development mitigation, and environmental leadership.

What a great pleasure it was for Green Marine to hold its annual conference, GreenTech 2016, in Quebec City under the theme: Mapping the future of sustainable shipping. This return to home port was very successful with the 9th annual conference drawing 226 delegates, including 17 exhibitors and 34 speakers. This largest-ever participation in a GreenTech conference far exceeded our expectations! The participation and the generous support of our sponsors made GreenTech 2016 a financial success, which is essential with all profits being reinvested into further developing Green Marine’s environmental program.
GreenTech 2016’s success was achieved by striking the right balance of informative presentations, networking opportunities, access to new technologies, a chance to explore the maritime environment where the event took place, and a good dose of camaraderie. The presenters and the discussion panels, the exhibition space, the opening Fish’n’Ships cocktail event, the Port of Québec cruise tour and the Certification Dinner all combined to provide GreenTech 2016 delegates with a relevant, entertaining symposium.
