About us

Green Marine is a voluntary environmental certification program for the maritime industry.

A voluntary initiative by the industry, Green Marine aims to guide the shipping industry towards environmental excellence. The environmental certification program addresses issues specific to maritime transportation, such as air, water and soil quality, the protection of biodiversity, and community relations.

Since May 2024, Green Marine International has been the umbrella organization for Green Marine, founded in 2007, and for Green Marine Europe, which was launched in 2020. Same mission, same objective: to encourage maritime enterprises to adopt concrete, measurable actions that go beyond regulatory requirements.

Participants types

The Green Marine environmental certification program brings together various types of participants:

Ship owners

Port authorities

Seaway corporation

Terminal operators

Shipyard managers

To obtain Green Marine certification, these participants must satisfy all the criteria applicable to their type of maritime operations in the program’s evaluation process. The membership also includes associations, supporters, and partners that support participants in their efforts to reduce their environmental footprint.

International recognition and growth

Since its creation in 2007, Green Marine has distinguished itself through its credibility and success in encouraging its participants to continually improve their environmental performance. Initially designed for the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes region (in Canada and the United States), the program quickly attracted continental and worldwide interest.

In 2020, Green Marine Europe was launched in collaboration with Surfrider Foundation Europe, extending the program to Europe. Today, Green Marine International is gradually opening to new regions of the world, such as Australia, Mexico, and the Bahamas.

The rules and challenges vary from one continent to another, but Green Marine International ensures that the programs maintain rigorous standards that are adapted to their respective realities. This new structure reinforces Green Marine’s presence in North America and Europe, while paving the way for global expansion!

A collaborative approach

Green Marine’s uniqueness stems from the composition of its advisory committees that bring together representatives from the industry, governments, research institutions and environmental organizations.

Team and structure

Green Marine International is a non-profit organization formed in May 2024 to oversee the Green Marine and Green Marine Europe environmental certification programs.
