The Marine Mammals Observation Network, the World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada), and the St. Lawrence Global Observatory – all three Green Marine supporters – offer a toolkit for ship owners whose crews navigate in whale habitat within the Northwest Atlantic, including the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, to help ensure whale-friendly navigation.
Available on the Navigating Whale Habitat website, the tools include training on whale identification and data collection, a data entry and visualization protocol and tool, and the new edition of A Mariner’s Guide to Whales in the Northwest Atlantic and the Eastern Arctic.
Developed for mariners who frequent the Northwest Atlantic and Eastern Arctic to provide them with information on the presence of whales and the areas where increased vigilance is advisable, the guide includes information on the problem of collisions, fact sheets on the whale species present in the territory, and maps indicating the distribution of whale populations in the Northwest Atlantic. The website invites ship owners to prepare and train crews for the return of whales to Northwest Atlantic waters next June.
The guides are free of charge. The French version can be downloaded here. The English version is also available online, but printed copies can also be ordered without charge. Contact the Marine Mammals Observation Network at info@romm.ca to order one or more copies.
