Almost $9 million in financial support to protect Canada’s oceans

August 11, 2021

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has announced $8.7 million in financial support to Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) for the protection of Canada’s oceans. Both the DFO and ONC are Green Marine supporters.

Established in 2007 by the University of Victoria, ONC operates several ocean observatories, and monitors the West and East coasts of Canada and the Arctic. These observations provide real-time data for scientific research, to help communities, industries and governments to make informed decisions about the future of the oceans.

By investing in ocean observational science, the DFO aims to use key data to ensure the sustainable management of ecosystems and species in order to better respond to present ocean challenges, such as warming, and rising sea levels. At the same time, this information will help the government to advance the nation’s ocean economy, a sector on which more than seven million Canadians depend. A blue economy plan is being developed by the government to guide future investments and measures by the federal government on the three coasts and in all ocean sectors.
