Green Shipping Study launched for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region

December 15, 2020

Green Marine has signed a contract with the Conference of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers to conduct a study on green shipping’s best practices. The study will seek to identify and outline some of the innovations and success stories that could further inspire others within the shipping industry to accelerate a green transition within the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region.

A thorough survey will be done from December 2020 to April 2021 consisting of:

  • Maritime transportation’s environmental best practices;
  • Existing government environmental policies and programs in Canada and the U.S.;
  • Examples of leading best practices by peer maritime systems, such as within the Baltic Sea, Rhine River or other comparable inland waterway systems;
  • Opportunities for innovative financing mechanisms to facilitate investments that reduce the industry’s environmental impacts within the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region; and,
  • Short-term actions and long-term aspirational goals that exceed regulatory compliance and drive improved environmental performance within the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence maritime system.

Green Marine members will individually be informed of this study and invited to contribute. The Conference of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers unites the chief executives from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Québec and Wisconsin.
