Sustainability internship offer at the Port of New Orleans

The Port of New Orleans, in partnership with the International Youth Offices of Québec (LOJIQ), is offering a 3-month internship from January 15 to April 6, 2018. The intern will act as advisor in sustainable development.

The Port of New Orleans is a deep-draft multipurpose port at the center of the world’s busiest port system — Louisiana’s Lower Mississippi River. Connected to major inland markets and Canada via 14,500 miles of waterways, six class I railroads and the interstate highway system, the Port is the ideal gateway for steel, project cargo, containers, coffee, natural rubber, chemicals, agricultural products, manufactured goods, passenger cruises and more.

The port of New Orleans is committed to protecting the environment and encourage the sustainable development of ports. The Department of Environmental Services works with entrepreneurs, tenants, operators, customers, community organizations and all stakeholders to meet and exceed environmental requirements.

The intern will provide support to the staff of the Department of Environmental Services, and at 40 hours / week. His term will be primarily to continue the implementation and development of compliance programs (quality of air and water, waste management, and emergency measures, sustainable development) for the environmental management system of the Port and its Green Marine certification.

Depending on the skills and interests of the student, special projects could also be included in the mandate, including:

  • The establishment of a program against idling on port property;
  • The development of a compliance guide for tenants and port operators;
  • The development of a reporting system for storm water discharges.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Aged between 18 and 35 years old;
  • Canadian citizen, or a permanent resident of Canada;
  • Domiciled in Québec for at least one year;
  • Holder of a valid Quebec health insurance card (RAMQ);
  • Having completed his studies;
  • Unemployed or underemployed and actively seeking employment in his field.

If your application is accepted, you have to become a member of the LOJIQ in order to receive support from the LOJIQ Foundation. The annual membership of $ 25 allows you to support the actions of LOJIQ among young Quebecers engaged in international mobility and gives you the benefits negotiated with partners.

Required profile:

  • Student who have recently graduated from university with a degree in environment, sustainable development, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, environmental management or other relevant field related to the mandate of the internship;
  • Interest in issues related to the marine industry and / or have an interest in this area;
  • Good organizational skills, writing, analysis and synthesis;
  • Demonstrate autonomy, flexibility and initiative;
  • Must be able to adapt to a dynamic work environment and in a different cultural environment;
  • Bilingual (perfectly fluent in French and English both oral and written)
  • Extended knowledge of Excel and Word;
  • Good knowledge of International Relations of Quebec, particularly in the United States and of the Maritime Strategy Québec (an asset).

Upon approval of the application, the participant will receive from the LOJIQ:

  • A refund of 65% of the cost of international transport between Quebec and New Orleans up to a maximum of $ 500;
  • The coverage of liability insurance and conditional and partial financial support for obtaining travel insurance / emergency medical care for the duration of the project abroad;
  • An allowance for local transportation in Quebec (for participants from remote areas);
  • A weekly allowance of $ 350 for 12 weeks.
