Port of Seattle commits $5 million to Seattle Aquarium for ocean sustainability

December 14, 2021

With a shared vision about the future of ocean sustainability, the Port of Seattle and the Seattle Aquarium have announced a partnership to protect the marine environment. The Port is investing a total of $5 million over five years for the Aquarium’s new Ocean Pavilion, which is scheduled to open in 2023.

The funding will be used to create a common platform to expand their collaboration and inform the public about their collective commitment to protecting the marine environment – flora as well fauna.

Along with detailing the port’s activities, the new Ocean Pavilion setting will highlight maritime environmental programs, marine sector innovation related to ocean conservation, as well as the diversity of regional career opportunities related to the marine industry and/or maritime conservation.

The new pavilion project involved a variety of other stakeholders at various phases, including the Seattle public, waterfront residents and stakeholders, local Indigenous communities, and government at the municipal, county and state levels to ensure a community-driven initiative.

Centrally located within the city’s waterfront, the Ocean Pavilion is expected to attract between 8 to 12 million visitors annually.
