Community and environment figure prominently in new Port of Everett budget

The Port of Everett will spend approximately $16.8 million toward environmental remediation and public access projects over the next three years to continue to evolve a vibrant and sustainably balanced working waterfront.

Some 81 projects in all form part of the $89-million overall budget approved in mid-November. The budget covers 2022 operating expenses as well as designates $53.7 million in total capital investment to expand and improve the seaport, taking into account the ongoing pandemic’s financial impacts.

A major priority is to build out Waterfront Place with the construction of restaurant buildings as well as the public infrastructure for future phases of the new mixed-use community hub. New waterfront trails at the new Baywood business park, as well as the completion of the Blue Heron Slough salmon habitat restoration project will further improve the ecology and public access to nature at the U.S. West Coast’s largest public marina.

The port’s new five-year capital improvement plan further includes the development of a second phase of Waterfront Place. Other plans include the continued remediation of legacy contamination, as well as investing in cleaner-running equipment at the seaport and marina. These and other initiatives will require the port to invest approximately $103 million through 2026.
