Wärtsilä investigates the feasibility of capturing and storing vessel-related carbon

March 16, 2021

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is technically feasible for the maritime industry to pursue, according to extensive R&D findings by Wärtsilä Exhaust Treatment.

Wärtsilä’s R&D suggests that technologically advancing exhaust gas abatement systems, i.e. scrubbers, would be able to address carbon dioxide emissions from the point of exhaust in the near future. The assessment is based on successful modeling that lends itself to being scaled up in size.

The company is now installing a one-megawatt plant at its test facility in Moss, Norway, to assess the performance of its CCS technologies in various scenarios and conditions.
